‘D’ Is for Divorce: Big Feelings on Sesame Street

In early 1992, a census report predicted that 40 percent of children would soon live in divorced homes. As one of the most famous children’s television programs in the world, Sesame Street was determined to take on a topic most kid’s shows wouldn’t touch. They cast Snuffy, a.k.a. Mr. Snuffleupagus, for the part of child divorcee.

With a team of its best writers, researchers, and producers, a segment was scripted and shot. It went through a half-dozen revisions, with input from the foremost researchers in the field. And on a typical sunny afternoon on Sesame Street, the furry, red, elephantine muppet known as Snuffy prepared to drop the bomb on his loyal preschool viewers.

“My dad is moving out of our cave,” he confides to Big Bird one afternoon, distraught after knocking over a house built of blocks. “I’m not sure where,” he continues, crying. “Some cave across town.”

Big Bird, naturally, is horrified. “But why?” he asks his friend.

Snuffy blinks his long, dark eyelashes, and pauses. We know what’s coming. Well, he explains, “because of something called a divorce.”

On This Day — December 28, 2008: Five Palestinian sisters killed in Israeli airstrike while they slept

The five Palestinian sisters were fast asleep when a night-time Israeli airstrike hit the next-door mosque in Gaza. One of the walls collapsed on to their small asbestos-roofed home and they were all killed in their beds. The eldest sister, Tahrir, was 17 years old, the youngest, Jawaher, just four.

“They grow up day after day and night after night. Within a second, I have lost them,” the girls’ father [pictured, bottom photo], Anwar Balousha, said yesterday. The 37-year-old, along with another three of his children, was himself injured in the attack on the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp.

The funerals of the sisters – Tahrir, 17; Ikram, 15; Samar, 12; Dina eight; and Jawaher, four – were attended by family members and thousands of mourners. But with space running out in the cemetery, the five girls had to be buried in just three graves, one for the eldest and the others forced to share.

Award-winning:  This photograph taken by Ilia Yefimovich for AFP showing Israeli settler David Be’eri running over two Palestinian boys who were throwing stones at his car was chosen as the best photograph at the “Local Testimony” exhibition 2011.
Be’eri, the chairman of Elad — an organization dedicated to expelling Palestinians from their homes in east Jerusalem in an effort to Judaize the area — was not found of any wrongdoing after police accepted his explanation that he had no intention to harm. The two boys were not tried as they were under the age of responsibility, however, a local resident who was present at the time was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment. ( Ilia Yefimovich / AFP)

An Indigenous mother with her child attempts to block riot police as they evict the tribe from their homeland in Brazil.
—
Indigenous people have been on the front lines for too long - it’s past time to follow their example.
It is not up to the poor to be on the frontlines yet again. It is not up to the indigenous to be on the frontlines. It is not up to the non-humans to be on the frontlines. It is our responsibility as beneficiaries of this system to bring a halt to the system.
MEND (the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) have been able to reduce oil industry output by up to 30 percent in Nigeria. They have done so because they love the land they live in and that land is being destroyed. We have much greater resources at our disposal. It’s our responsibility to use those resources and to use the privilege that we have to stop this culture from killing the planet.

This is so sad.

This is why so many people don’t trust the government or doctors. Sure, some of this kids got early access to AZT & that extended their life span. But many of them did not. In fact some of these kids died.

In one study, researchers reported a “disturbing” higher death rate among children who took higher doses of a drug. That study was unable to determine a safe and effective dosage.

And yes, the government consented to the studies because they were assured the kids would have advocates. But, there was apparently no monitoring to ensure that those advocates existed, or were acting in the best interests of the children. These children were failed by a system that was supposed to be protecting them.

"The practice ensured that foster children — mostly poor or minority — received care from world-class researchers at government expense, slowing their rate of death and extending their lives. But it also exposed a vulnerable population to the risks of medical research and drugs that were known to have serious side effects in adults and for which the safety for children was unknown."

If you know ANYTHING about genetics, you should be well aware of the fact that Brown alleles are more dominant than blue alleles and the chances this happening is probably one in a billion.

Cute 7-year-old vegan drops some fucking knowledge like nobody’s business.

Pretty sure not getting cancer is a lot more complicated than just eating a vegan diet. Reducing not getting cancer to food choices puts the responsibility on individuals to consume the right way (despite many folks’ lack of access - whether physical or financial - to fresh fruits and vegetables), instead of on the State, capitalism, and corporations for poisoning the entire world, especially the neighborhoods of People of Color and working class people. Smash capitalism and the state, don’t shame people for not having access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

WOMBAT, I’m pretty sure this kids analysis will get better since they’re 7 YEARS OLD. Seriously, people don’t come out of the womb with your superior analysis. Where were we when we were 7 years old?

EDIT: Not saying that the commentary is wrong (it’s spot on) just saying that for here age they’re at a better place than most kids.

I’m not saying that I had any sort of analysis when I was 7, but people of all ages spout shit about “just eat a vegan diet and all your problems will be solved!”, meanwhile ignoring the ways that environmental classism and racism factor into it. I don’t expect a 7-year-old white kid to have that kind of analysis, but I expect you to, and when you post this without any sort of acknowledgement of why certain parts are problematic, I’m going to add my analysis to it.

Yes, I should’ve posted the points where they failed on (they’re glaring), but I would be so stoked to see half the amount of this persons passion and politics in the kids that I work with on a daily basis. You have to admit that their one adorable comrade and that they shows a lot of potential for the future. It’s basically destined for them to be an anarchist and down to fight all forms of oppression as they grows older, even though they fully doesn’t “get it” right now.

    She’s my new hero! <3
